Our survey carried out among 1,142 community managers in France allows us to take stock of CM salaries, to observe the differences between remuneration in Paris and in the provinces, but also between junior and senior profiles. So, how much do CMs earn in 2023? We take stock!

The salary of community managers in France according to their profile

To facilitate access to the data from our survey, we provide this comparison tool below. These are the gross salaries of community managers on permanent contracts. You can filter by job title, company size, professional experience, location and gender. This last data makes it possible to measure inequalities between men and women.

4 data are proposed:

  • The average salary depending on the selected profile
  • The median (50% of respondents earn less, 50% earn more)
  • The 1st quartile (25% of community managers earn less)
  • The 3rd quartile (25% of community managers earn more)

The remuneration of community managers in France in 2023

In 2023, the average salary of community managers and social media managers on permanent contracts stands at 30,154 euros gross annually (i.e. 2,513 euros per month). Average remuneration has decreased very slightly compared to 2022: -0.4%.

On the other hand, the median salary is increasing and reaches 29,000 euros per year (compared to 28,000 euros last year). This is equivalent to 2,417 euros per month. Other interesting data: 25% of community managers earn less than 24,000 euros (compared to 23,000 last year) and 25% of them earn more than 35,000 euros (compared to 36,000 in 2022).

The salary difference between a CM and a social media manager

It is interesting to see that those whose job title is “social media manager” receive a median remuneration of 34,000 euros compared to only 25,500 euros for those who are in the position of “community manager”. If the pay gap was already significant last year, it is widening again this year.

Remuneration of CMs according to years of experience

Unsurprisingly, the remuneration of community managers increases as their career progresses. We observe the following median salaries:

  • Less than 5 years of experience: 27,000 euros (vs. 25,000 euros in 2022)
  • Between 5 and 9 years of experience: 30,000 euros (vs. 31,500 euros)
  • 10 years of experience and more: 31,000 euros (vs. 33,000 euros)

This year, the trend is reversing, the pay gap is narrowing between junior and senior profiles. The salary offered at the start of their career is higher than last year while experienced profiles (more than 5 years of experience) see their median salary decrease slightly.

The salary of CMs in VSEs, SMEs, ETIs and large companies

Here are the median salaries observed by company size:

  • Small businesses (less than 9 employees): 24,000 euros (vs. 23,000 euros in 2022)
  • SME (less than 250 employees): 28,000 euros (vs. 27,500 euros)
  • ETI (less than 5,000 employees): 31,000 euros (vs. 32,000 euros)
  • Large companies (more than 5,000 employees): 39,000 euros (vs. 40,000 euros)

The differences in remuneration depending on the size of the company are still very present but the gap is narrowing between small and large structures. This year, we are seeing an increase in salaries for VSEs and SMEs while salaries for ETIs and large companies are decreasing slightly.

Salary differences between Paris and the French regions

As with the majority of professions, salaries for community managers are higher in Paris. They reach 35,000 euros in the capital (median) compared to only 27,000 euros in other French regions.

Compared to 2022, we observe a drop in salaries in Paris (-2.8%) but an increase in salaries in the provinces (+3.7%).

Inequalities between men and women

In 2023, salary inequalities persist between men and women:

  • Average salary for men: 32,212 euros (median salary: 32,000 euros)
  • Average salary of women: 29,462 euros (median salary: 28,000 euros)

If inequalities were reduced significantly in 2022, this is not the case this year. In 2023, a female CM earns on average 8.5% less than their male colleagues (they earned 4.4% less in 2022). The median salary of men increased by 6.6% while that of women stagnated compared to last year.

Methodology: survey carried out online by BDM, from June 20 to July 17, 2023, among 1,142 community managers and social media managers practicing their profession in France.
